Undefeated Dixie Blues Win Home Opener
Most people are unaware of it, but you don't have to wait until September for pro-football in Jacksonville.
Saturday night was the home opener for the Jacksonville Dixie Blues, a women's professional football team playing in the Women's Football Alliance. The team has been around since 2001 and plays their home games at the George H. Hodges Field at Bolles School.
Last night's game was special for several reasons. The event was billed as the "pink" game -- the team wore pink and encouraged all fans to wear pink. Proceeds from ticket sales and the snack stand were donated to The Donna Foundation, a group dedicated to fighting breast cancer.
The Dixie Blues also took care of business on the field, easily defeating the Memphis Belles by 34-20. The score actually makes the game sound much closer than it really was... the Dixie Blues were leading 27-0 at half-time.
This win improves the team's record to 3-0 for the season. Their next home game will be played at Bolles on June 6th against the Emerald Coast Barracudas.
