Tuesday’s Top TV Picks

Fans have to say goodbye to "Reaper" Tuesday night (CW, tonight 8 p.m. ET/PT), as this once-promising series airs its finale. Let's hope the producers are kind enough to wrap the story up, as they apparently won't be getting another chance to do so.

So, are your summer standards low enough to go "Mental" (Fox, 9 p.m. ET/PT)? U.K. import Chris Vance ("Prison Break") stars in this postseason toss-away as the new director of psychiatric services at a Los Angeles hospital, where he clashes with his staff and his ultimately supportive boss (Annabella Sciorra, lifeless in a role that "House's" Lisa Edelstein proves doesn't have to be thankless). He's unorthodox, of course, because when was the last time anyone orthodox had his own show?

"Mental" is of some interest to those who cover the business of show business because it was shot in Bogota, Colombia, making it a kind of next-step poster child for cost-cutting international co-productions. Unfortunately for viewers, you can't watch a deal, you watch a series, and this one is hideously tired. It's not just that you've seen the same show done better - that's true of much of TV. It's that you've seen the same show done adequately, and this one isn't. Vance might yet become a TV star. Just don't expect "Mental" to do the trick.

  1. Fans don't have to say goodbye to Reaper yet! Industry insiders confirm Hollywood Reporter's article that ABC Studios is actively trying to sell Reaper. Syndication is a very real possiblity right now, but EVERYONE is recommending writing your affiliates! Help out! All details here: http://community.livejournal.com/reaperdmv/46875.html

  2. Wait, Reaper isn't dead yet! Everything we're hearing is sounding GOOD for the syndication deal for Reaper Season 3. People have had very positive responses from CW affiliates they’ve written. Today we received word that two of the biggest Tribune-owned CW markets in Texas are interested, and since Tribune owns a boatload of affiliates, it’s thought if the Tribune stations come on board, Season 3 is a lock. If you’re concerned about how show creators Fazekas & Butters’ new contract at Fox will affect the show, or Tyler Labine’s new series, we have updates on that too.

We still need fans to show their support; we have about ONE WEEK to get across our love for this show! All links and details here: http://tinyurl.com/reaperlatest

  5. I thought this was supposed to be "TOP" TV picks. It seems to be a whine about a crummy show that was cancelled and a hooray about an even more insipid one being added to the faulty lineup..

  6. There isn't much left after a repeat of House & "TV's 50 Funniest Phrases."
