Tuesday’s Top TV Picks
Fans have to say goodbye to "Reaper" Tuesday night (CW, tonight 8 p.m. ET/PT), as this once-promising series airs its finale. Let's hope the producers are kind enough to wrap the story up, as they apparently won't be getting another chance to do so.
So, are your summer standards low enough to go "Mental" (Fox, 9 p.m. ET/PT)? U.K. import Chris Vance ("Prison Break") stars in this postseason toss-away as the new director of psychiatric services at a Los Angeles hospital, where he clashes with his staff and his ultimately supportive boss (Annabella Sciorra, lifeless in a role that "House's" Lisa Edelstein proves doesn't have to be thankless). He's unorthodox, of course, because when was the last time anyone orthodox had his own show?
"Mental" is of some interest to those who cover the business of show business because it was shot in Bogota, Colombia, making it a kind of next-step poster child for cost-cutting international co-productions. Unfortunately for viewers, you can't watch a deal, you watch a series, and this one is hideously tired. It's not just that you've seen the same show done better - that's true of much of TV. It's that you've seen the same show done adequately, and this one isn't. Vance might yet become a TV star. Just don't expect "Mental" to do the trick.
