Poll: Crist Still Crushing Rivals Rubio and Meek
A new Strategic Vision poll out today confirms what earlier polls have shown, Charlie Crist is the odds-on favorite to replace Mel Martinez in the United States Senate.
Currently, Crist is leading his main Republican primary rival Marco Rubio by a huge 3-1 margin. The poll shows Republicans backing Crist by 59%-22% for Rubio.
"I cannot for the life of me figure out why Rubio is running against Crist for U.S. Senate," political columnist Matt Towery told the St. Petersburg Times. "I think it's stupid. U.S. Senate races do not get the name recognition that governor's races do, so if he's running for that reason, he's not going to get it."
In fact, the Governor's race could provide the more interesting GOP Primary match-up. Although State Senator Paula Dockery has not officially entered the race, the new poll showed that she would pull 28% to McCollum's 44% in the GOP primary.
“While McCollum starts off with a strong lead against a potential Dockery candidacy, it is not as overwhelming as would be expected,” said Strategic Vision CEO David E. Johnson.
Assuming Crist does get past Rubio in the Senate race, his prospects are looking bright in the general election as well. Democratic front-runner Kendrick Meek, a Congressman from South Florida, is trailing Crist by a 2-1 margin. Crist draws 59% to Meek's 29%.
In a hypothetical Rubio vs. Meek match-up, Rubio would win by only 31% to 30%. That's a figure Crist supporters are sure to cite with regularity as the campaign heats up.
