Monday’s Top TV Picks

It's a big night for returning cable series, starting with one of the most popular: "The Closer" (TNT, tonight, 9 p.m. ET/PT). Kyra Sedgwick's Brenda is now married to her FBI beau Fritz (Jon Tenney) - which could be a problem, as her first case of the season lands her right into the middle of an FBI investigation. The series' crime plots are seldom as strong as they should be, but the show compensates with good characters and a very good cast - led of course by Sedgwick, who is just a pleasure to watch. Which has always been the biggest reason so many do.

"The Closer" is paired with Steven Bochco's "Raising the Bar" (10 p.m. ET/PT), a legal drama starring "NYPD Blue'''s Mark-Paul Gosselaar. Bar may not be any better this season, but at least Gosselaar has a better haircut, and that should help - which, if you've never seen the show, should give you some idea of how incredibly, distractingly bad the old haircut was.

Showtime leads into the premiere of its fabulous, summer-saving new sitcom Nurse Jackie with the return of "Weeds" (10 p.m. ET/PT). And the premiere has a big question to answer: Is Nancy pregnant or not?

Fans of "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List" (Bravo, 10 p.m. ET/PT) should be happy to hear the show is back. And even happier to hear who's visiting: Bette Midler.
