Representative Ray Calls for a Special Session, Will Host Local Town Hall
On Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Representative Lake Ray submitted
a letter to the Speaker of the House, Representative Larry Cretul,
requesting a special session following Governor Charlie Crist's veto of
House Bill 1171.
The bill allows some companies to offer policies with unregulated rates
and gives consumers the continued freedom to choose their own insurance company. The bill was passed 105-13 in the House and 27-9 in the Senate.
According to a poll conducted by the Florida Chamber of Commerce,
two-thirds of Floridians supported the bill.
"We all share the governor's concern that insurance and other costs of
living are increasing and keeping insurance rates low helps all Florida
citizens," wrote Ray, a co-sponsor of the bill. "Unfortunately, we are
now faced with the challenge once again of having to immediately solve this issue."
Representative Ray feels that a special session will give lawmakers and
Governor Crist the opportunity to reach a compromise on this issue.
This Monday, June 29th, Representative Ray will be hosting a town hall
meeting and will discuss this issue, along with other issues of concern
to the community. The meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Police Athletic League at 3450 Monument Road. All citizens are invited to attend.
