Campaign Trail Updates

Democrat CHRIS CHIARI may challenge incumbent Democratic Rep. EVAN JENNE in Broward-based House District 100, the Miami Herald and The New Times both reported Friday. Chiari has run before in District 91, and lost twice to Rep. ELLYN BOGADANOFF, R-Fort Lauderdale. Chiari is planning to try to paint Jenne, D-Dania Beach, as beholden to special interests. Jenne countered in the Herald that he gave money to Chiari in 2008 and was one of the few non-lawyers to donate to Chiari.

Meanwhile, Democrat FREDA SHERMAN STEVENS, who lost to Jenne in 2008, held a campaign kickoff on Friday evening in Fort Lauderdale as she jumps in the District 91 race. The incumbent, Bogdanoff, is running for Senate. Republicans DAVID MAYMON and YOMIN POSTELNIK are already in the District 91 House race.

The 1,374 congressional candidates running for seats in 2010 or beyond raised $168.5 million between April and June of this year and spent $73.6 million of that, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington organization that tracks congressional fundraising. Democrats pulled in an average of $146,858 and Republicans $106,793. Among Florida candidates for U.S. House seats, Republican Rep. VERN BUCHANAN was the leader, having collected $867,347. Rep. RON KLEIN, (D), wasn't far behind with $740,322. The full list can be found at www.Opensecrets.org.

- Republican congressional candidate DOROTHY HUKILL on Monday sent out a list of 33 current and former state lawmakers who are endorsing her bid to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. SUZANNE KOSMAS in District 24. Also in the race is Republican state Rep. SANDY ADAMS, R-Orlando.

- Pinellas County Republican State Committeewoman NANCY RILEY and Committeeman TONY DIMATTEO, and Pasco Committeewoman LONA O'REILLY and Committeeman BILL BUNTING said this past week that they were endorsing RICHARD CORCORAN'S candidacy for House District 45. Corcoran, a former adviser to GOP House leaders and a Pasco County lawyer has two Republican opponents, FABIAN CALVO and KATHRYN STARKEY. So far, there are no Democrats in the race.

- Former Democratic Rep. JAMES “HANK” HARPER, who failed to qualify for an Aug. 25 special state House election to replace Rep. PRISCILLA TAYLOR, because of some sort of paperwork mistake, endorsed Riviera Beach Councilman CEDRICK THOMAS' bid for the seat, The Palm Beach Post reported. Taylor was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Palm Beach County Commission Running in the Democratic primary againt Thomas for the District 84 seat is Delray Beach Commissioner MACK BERNARD, who on Monday was endorsed by outgoing incumbent Taylor and another former holder of the seat, ADDIE GREENE.

- U.S. Senate candidate KENDRICK MEEK was endorsed on Friday by Democratic U.S. Rep. KATHY CASTOR of Tampa, not much of a surprise now that Meek is the only big name Democrat in the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. MEL MARTINEZ.

  1. Yomin Postelnik's campaign in House District 91 has huge implications for Florida. Just look at his platform at http://www.abetterflorida.com. It's one of the most refreshing platforms I've seen. It's time for bold leaders.
