Crist Names LeMieux to Fill U.S. Senate Term

lemieuxToday Governor Charlie Crist named his former Chief of Staff George LeMieux to fill out the remainder of Mel Martinez's U.S. Senate term.

“I congratulate George LeMieux for being appointed by the governor to fill the remainder of my term," said Martinez. "George is bright, capable, and an accomplished administrator. My staff and I stand ready to ensure a smooth transition."

LeMieux was one of the lesser well-known candidates that was being considered for the post. After attending Coral Springs High School and graduating in 1987, LeMieux went to Emory University where he majored in political science and graduated magna cum laude.

Crist and LeMieux have been close allies for years. LeMieux even earned the nickname "the maestro'' for orchestrating Crist's successful campaign for Governor in 2006.

LeMieux sought elected office in 1998, when he challenged Democratic State Representative Tracy Stafford in Broward County. But Stafford defeated LeMieux by 13% on election day.

LeMieux went on to serve as chairman of the Broward County Republican Party, deputy state attorney general, and Chief of Staff to the Governor.

LeMieux and his wife Meike have three sons: Max, Taylor, and Chase.
