Capitol watchers don’t need a calendar to tell when the end of some months is nearing.
They can just watch the fund-raisers increase.
Next week, a flurry of cash-calls is scheduled as the end of another fund-raising quarter approaches Sept. 30.
Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, leads off the list Tuesday when he looks to sweeten his Senate campaign account soon after he gavels to a close the Legislative Budget Commission he serves as House chairman.
“You know how it is,” Rivera told the News Service of Florida on Wednesday. “Sept. 30 is a big day. You want to look good.”
Through the June 30 quarter, Rivera had collected $396,839 to Republican rival Rep. Anitere Flores’ $169,470 in the race to succeed term-limited Sen. Alex Villalobos, R-Miami, finance records show.
The Rivera event will be held at Tallahassee’s Governor’s Club, and a day later, he’ll be celebrating his 44th birthday with a Miami fund-raiser featuring several former Miami Dolphins.
Also at the Governor’s Club after the LBC meeting will be fellow commission member, Rep. Denise Grimsley, R-Lake Placid, who has penciled in a fund-raiser of her own.
Given the focus on fund-raising, perhaps it’s no surprise that the lead item on the LBC’s agenda is “Long Range Financial Outlook.”
Later in the week, Sen. Nan Rich, D-Weston, will be raising money for Senate Democrats at an event at Fort Lauderdale’s Tower Club. Senate Republicans plan to push back Sept. 23 in Tallahassee with check-passing at the Governor’s Club.
