"Rail is cheaper to build than road! "

Only if we stop spending money on roads. The problem with all of the rail and other transit oriented "plans" is they don't include any planning for reducing the amount of money being spent on roads to make driving more convenient.

The government spent multiple times the amount of $'s they are planning to put out for these rail projects on saving the auto manufacturing industry and encouraging people to buy cars. The rules they put on cars are all designed around making it cheaper to drive (fuel efficiency).

If you want to make alternative transit successful in the US then you need to make driving less attractive. Reverse the fuel efficiency requirements and set a cap wherein cars cannot get "better" than 20 mpg, make all new or "re-hab" development reduce their parking by 25%, make drive thru's illegal (think about it), refuse to fund any "new" road lanes until all existing transportation infrastructure (roads, bridges, rails lines, etc) are at a grade A level, let gas "retailers" charge whatever they want, etc.

Right now the government (which means "we the people") are talking out of both sides of our mouths and doing nothing more than throwing money away.

As we reach massive overpopulation on this 25,000 mile round planet, the best way to ship humans is by rail in freight boxes. I am from Massachusetts where they ran the subway from Boston ,on former rail tracks, out to the suburbs about 20 miles. It was necessary, In order to avoid hours in traffic, one friend took his boat down the Charles River to Boston to get to work. In Japan, I found that before you are allowed to buy a car, the "driveway police" come out and measure your driveway in order to make sure that you have a place to park it. The "Smart Cars" that have arrived in JAX are not considered "smart" in Japan since their engine is just a couple of cc's too big and that puts them into the next tax bracket on engine sizes.
Only answer to more people is to box em up. Has the added benefit that the politicos can rake in the bucks as the money to do so passes by.
