Talk of Anorexia, Drugs Surround Murphy’s Death
Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton posted on his blog: "People just don't typically die at 32 of natural causes!!!!!!! Absolutely devastating. Especially because this comes as no surprise! We, and those who knew Brittany personally, saw this coming. That does not make this any less horrible."
Many others were making the leap, still unconfirmed, that the heart attack was caused by drug use. EmbeddedIn.LA tweeted: "Brittnay Murphy dead at 32 - heart attack aka ODed. Don't risk your life using drugs. Life is too short."
Jason Calacanis of Mahalo.com tweeted what a lot of people were thinking: "32 yearold heart attack in Hollywood Sat night? suspect."
Others have suggested that the actress' weight may have played a role in her death. Just three years ago Murphy was forced to respond to critics who noted that she appeared to be getting even thinner, perhaps dangerously so.
The actress spoke out: ""I'm the same size I was in Clueless; it's just that the weight in your face changes as you grow and get older. I used to feel embarrassed about being too tiny. I had a publicist at the time who told me that I should cover my arms up in photos. She felt that if I did that, they would stop picking on me. She meant well, but it made me really self-conscious. Then I came to terms with it ... This is my body; I'm proud of it, so who cares?"
Not all the online reaction was drug or anorexia-related.
Actor and Twitter super-star Ashton Kutcher, who co-starred with Murphy in the film 'Just Married' and once dated the actress tweeted two messages on Sunday afternoon: "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon." followed by: "see you on the other side kid."
The LA County Coroner is taking control of Murphy's body from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The LAPD has announced that it will launch a death investigation.
"In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy," said a family representative.
