Bill to Name Road After Jim King Moves Forward

A bill to name a road in his home Duval County after the late Sen. Jim King cleared its final committee hurdle Wednesday and is likely headed for a vote by the full House and Senate.

The measure (HB 63), which would rename a portion of Florida Highway 116 between state road 9A east of Jacksonville and Mayport Road in Duval County the “James E. ‘Jim’ King, Jr., Parkway,” was unanimously approved by the House Economic Development & Community Affairs Policy Council. It had already been approved last month by the Transportation & Economic Development Appropriations Committee and last fall by the  Roads, Bridges & Ports Policy Committee and its now ready to be calendared by the full House.

A companion measure in the Senate (SB 176) has been approved by the only committee it was referred to, clearing the way for a quick floor vote in the chamber King served in from 1999 until his death last year.

King, who died after a bout with cancer, served in the House from 1986 to 1999 and was Senate President from 2002-2004.
