After seven weekends in first place, Avatar was dethroned at the box office by the romance Dear John, which took in $32.4 million.
But don’t shed any tears for James Cameron’s sci-fi epic: Avatar was No. 2 with $23.6 million, which raises its domestic total to $630.1 million and its worldwide record to $2.2 billion.
Avatar, an Oscar best-picture nominee, has passed the previous record-holder, Cameron’s 1997 Titanic, as top-grossing film of all time, a feat also fueled by today’s higher admission prices.
Dear John, based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, is about on a long-distance love story between a soldier (Channing Tatum) and his sweetheart (Amanda Seyfried) back home. Final box-office figures are due today.
