Romney Boosts Thrasher at Jacksonville Event
Former Governor of Massachusetts and 2008 Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney today was the honorary event chairman at a fundraiser for John Thrasher, Republican candidate for Florida Senate District 8. Romney also announced his endorsement of Thrasher’s re-election campaign and hosted an invitation-only meet and greet.
“I am happy to be here today with John to offer my endorsement of his re-election campaign for Florida Senate,” said Romney. “John Thrasher has proven that he is a principled leader with strong conservative values. Florida needs leaders in the Legislature right now, like John, who will get the economy moving again and are committed to keeping taxes low and fostering a pro-business environment.”
Thrasher currently represents Florida Senate District 8, which includes parts of Duval, Flagler, Nassau, St. Johns and Volusia Counties. He also serves as the interim chairman of the Republican Party of Florida. From 1998 to 2000, he served as the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives.
“I am grateful that Governor Romney would give me his endorsement in my bid for re-election and I thank him for being here today,” said Thrasher. “If re-elected to the Florida Senate, I will remain dedicated to affecting positive change for Northeast Florida and will continue to lead with strong Republican principles and ensure that our district remains one of the strongest in our state.”
Thrasher faces a challenge in the August 24 Republican primary from beaches dermatologist Charles Perniciaro, and potentially from Democrat Deborah Gianoulis in the general election. Perniciaro is blasting Thrasher as having ties to disgraced former RPOF Chairman Jim Greer.
