Is President Obama the Worst President in History?

I host a radio show on WEUS 810 AM in Orlando, Fla., on Sundays 1-4 p.m. EST. On last week's show, I had firebrand Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) as a guest. "Is President Obama better or worse than Jimmy Carter?" I asked her. "Worse. Easily worse," she replied. She went on to say that without question, Obama was the worst president in U.S. history.

Is it true?

There are only two other true contenders for the title of "worst president in U.S. history": Jimmy Carter and James Buchanan. Warren G. Harding's tenure was corrupt but not disastrous, and Andrew Johnson's presidency failed because of his Southern roots and wrongful adherence to extreme states rights concepts in the aftermath of the Civil War, not because his administration effectuated any grave damage to the nation. Only Buchanan matches the record of incompetence, failure and wrongheadedness pursued by Obama.

Take Jimmy Carter, for example. He was responsible for the fall of the Shah in Iran and the subsequent rise of the Ayatollahs. He emboldened the Soviets to invade Afghanistan. He oversaw the Three Mile Island incident and presided over a high unemployment rate of 7.1 percent and staggering inflation and interest rates, both of which topped 18 percent by early 1980. His presidency saw gas rationing and shortages, the surrender of the Panama Canal and the boycott of the 1980 Olympics. Pretty bad by any measure.

During his entire first term, Carter's record doesn't touch the Obama administration's record in its first year and a half. Obama has already tacitly OK'd the Iranian nuclear program and derided Israel's nuclear program. He has allowed Iranian protestors to be slaughtered in the streets without so much as a peep for days on end. Obama has allowed the Russians to sponsor an uprising in Kyrgyzstan that resulted in the removal of a U.S. airbase. He has lent legitimacy to an Islamist Turkish government and sold American debt to a communist Chinese government that supports North Korea. He has presided over the largest oil spill in world history in the Gulf of Mexico and spent his efforts blaming everyone but himself.

He's poised to raise our taxes at the end of the year. He's pushing for comprehensive "immigration reform" that will really act as an amnesty for illegal immigrants. He has denigrated Arizona before Mexico, bowed before the king of Saudi Arabia and the Chinese president and the Japanese emperor, hugged a Venezuelan quasi-dictator, and undermined a constitutional uprising in Honduras. He has pushed carbon taxes and gas taxes and estate taxes. He has propped up unfit mortgage borrowers and penalized those who pay their mortgage on time. He has bailed out his buddies in the banking industry and nationalized the auto and health industries for the benefit of his union friends.

He has insulted the Cambridge police and defended Muslim terrorists like Maj. Nidal Hassan. He has utilized advisers who are Marxists (former Green Jobs Czar Van Jones), anti-Semites (foreign policy adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, special adviser Samantha Power, National Security Adviser Adm. James Jones), racists (Attorney General Eric Holder), sycophantic pro-Islamists (Deputy National Security Adviser for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism John Brennan), kooks (Director of White House Office of Science and Technology John Holdren), perverts (Safe Schools Czar Kevin Jennings), and paid thugs (Rahm Emanuel).

When Obama took office, the national debt was just under $10 trillion. Now it is $12 trillion, and by 2015, it will be at least $19.6 trillion. Unemployment under Obama increased to 9.7 percent, up from 7.6 percent when Bush left office. The inflation rate has yet to explode, but most economists believe it will have to unless Obama drastically raises taxes, destroying the economy even further.

Carter can't touch this guy.

As for Buchanan, the man was a symptom of his times — an active supporter of admitting Kansas to the Union as a slave state and of Chief Justice Roger Taney's execrable opinion in Dred Scott. He was also responsible for a near-war in Utah against the Mormons, inflation of the currency, and the abominable state of the Union's military position at the beginning of the Civil War.

It would be difficult for Obama to top this record of pure disgrace — after all, he doesn't have to face down the internal specter of a looming war over a major moral issue like slavery, so his tenure can't be as cataclysmically destructive. But like Buchanan, he'll try to subvert American principles all the same.

In short, Obama may not be the worst president in American history. But he's easily the worst American president in modern history — and we'll have to reassess the case in two and a half years, because there's no sign Obama will change his ways. There is good news, though. All of America's worst presidents served one term, and American recovered. That's because if any of them had served a second, America could have been utterly decimated. Americans had better wake up and place Obama in his proper context by 2012, or it may be too late for recovery.

  1. Considering I haven't seen much of anything to change after the election and the fact that quite a number of people were held over from the previous administration, I'd consider the current administration to be Bush (II) lite. Obama inherited an incredibly damaged economy and two wars. Obama's real main issue seems to be that he's just too tentative.

Starting two wars, and threatening to start a third -- without ending at least one of the first two and having no idea where to get the troops to start, kicking off the third worst recession in the history of this great nation? Hands down, Bush (II) ranks below Obama.

  2. Great article. I wholeheartedly agree. If not for the lapdog media, his approval would be sub zero. I pray we survive another two and a half years until he can be ousted.

  3. Ben,
You seem obsessed with blaming presidents for things that happened during their tenure, but were completely beyond their control. Carter was responsible for the fall of Pahlavi? HAHAHA!! Although a strategic ally of the US, Pahlavi was an oppressive an arrogant leader who ignored the less-than-secular views of the people. Predictably, this led to a religiously fueled, out-of-control populist revolution. If he and his cronies hadn't been such dimwits, they could have maintained power.

And as for Turkey's Islamist government, well...you are familiar with the concept of democracy, I think? The citizens of Turkey elect their own government periodically, so I suppose a better alternative would be to completely alienate them and encourage an even MORE radical government by not "lending legitimacy"? Good move, Ben. I'm sure that type of smart decisionmaking would keep Eastern Europe from descending into ethnic infighting and chaotic rioting as long-held tensions between Muslims and Christians reignite.

Yes, let's invade, occupy the Balkans! Another $9.6 trillion down the drain! Oh, where did that number come from? Why, it's what you said Obama is going to spend by 2015. And where is he going to spend it? Primarily on the War Against Musli--err, Terror! Who started this most recent trend of shoveling money into a raging inferno? Well, from the way you write, I'd imagine you're well-acquainted with the previous administration. Please give Sir Spendalot my regards, it's because of him that we're in our current dire situation on many fronts.

I would submit that George W. Bush is quite likely the worst president we've ever had, for obvious reasons.

  4. I didn't need to read the article to find the answer. But I do disagree with the article, Obama is an outright P.O.S. I have no love for this stain on Washington's underwear.

After reading the article I can only say that times and circumstances of the nation at Buchanan's time were much different, he may have made some very stupid choices as a president of this nation. However, Obama's errors considering all the nice technologies and fairly decent circumstances he received at the time he became president He has performed like a horses ass.

Don't get me wrong Bush wasn't the greatest president either but let’s not forget he had to deal with terrorists attacking the nation. But I feel Bush should've ended that war in 2003 after we caught that slime bucket Saddam but Bush didn't, and that's about when he lost my respect. I also agree attacking Iraq made little since to me at the time, but after several friends of mine returned from a 5 year T.O.D. I have a better understanding of why Iraq was a main military target. Understanding what a complete P.O.S. Saddam Hussein was I feel getting rid of that pile of dung was a great American victory.

But Obama came in to office bitching and moaning about this war that should've ended so long ago and did nothing about it except sending more troops out to war when he could've stopped it, so all I have to say is eat shit Mr. Obama. Obama is nothing but a hypocrite on this matter so don't even bitch about Bush's failure on that issue anymore. Go bitch to your precious Obama whom you stupid liberals or should I say progressives all worship.

The facts regarding Obama's massive failures as the Worst President of America that have been pointed out in this article are awesome. I have to say that while the article is suggesting that Obama is only the 2nd worst president in American history it really can't be compared because the circumstances are too different. I will note the article suggested that in current times Obama takes the cake and to that I will shout my appraisal with a hardy "Here! Here!." Obama still hasn’t proven he was ever an American born citizen. He’s pushing an extremely progressive agenda which isn’t that far off from socialism/communism.

The last time I read The Constitution, The Declaration of Independence and The Bill of Rights it lead me to believe this country was a Republic. I also felt that everything written in those documents was applicable to the United States of our day. Those laws are still easily applicable to our times and there is no reason whatsoever that those documents are no longer applicable. Nothing other than a Socialist/Communist progressive pushing POS of a president that in my opinion should receive nothing less than capital punishment for trying to fuck over a nation that so many good men and women have died for and spilt their own blood to preserve it on the battle field.
