Fired Via Text: Employees at Barducci’s Italian Bistro Receive Surprising News July 4

Fired by Text Message

It's bad enough to lose your job, but to get fired through a text message takes it to a whole new level.

Employees at Barducci's Italian Bistro said they lost their jobs without notice after the restaurant suddenly closed and are still waiting for their paychecks.

The restaurant's owner, Gregory Kennedy sent text messages to the employees saying, "I unfortunately need to inform you that i have been forced to close Barducci's effective immediately," he wrote via text on July 4, 2013. Kennedy then went on to say that, despite his best efforts, "There were circumstances I was not able to address." He wished her "all the best." Any final payroll checks would be attended to, he wrote, "after the accounting has been finalized."

"I think it's immoral," Jodi Jackson, who worked at Barducci's Italian Bistro in Winter Park, Florida for two years, told WFTV. "I think it's cowardice."

And when WFTV tried to contact Gregory Kennedy at Barducci's Italian Bistro, he sent a text message to them as well. "Unfortunately businesses are forced to close across Orlando every day especially in the restaurant sector," he wrote. "I am working to resolve issues including final paychecks as quickly as possible."

The employees aren't the only one being hung out to dry. Customers who bought a Groupon deal for the restaurant are wondering if they'll get their money back.

Lauren Bartolome said she bought a Groupon for Barducci's that's now useless. "Now I'm thinking about how I'm going to get my money back from that. I don't know what to do now," Bartolome told WFTV.

The good news is that Groupon said they will give a refund to customers who purchased the now useless Groupon.

The bad news, employees are still without a job.

Florida Restaurant Owner Fires Entire Staff via Text Message

Gregory Kennedy, the owner of Barducci's Italian Bistro in Orlando, decided, for reasons that still aren't clear, to close down his restaurant earlier this month. But instead of holding an all-staff meeting, he sent the following text message to his employees on their day off: "I unfortunately need to inform you that I have been forced to close Barducci's effective immediately."
