Florida Man Arrested for Impersonating a Police Officer for Discount at Dunkin Donuts”
A Florida man has been charged with false impersonation of a police officer and improper exhibition of a firearm after he demanded discounts at Dunkin Donuts on State Road 54 in Trinity, a community north of Tampa.
Sheriff Chris Nocco says Charles "Chuck" Barry, 48-years old pretended to be a law enforcement officer and asked for a discount on Nov. 6 when he used the drive-through of the Dunkin' Donuts store at 10829 State Road 54 in Trinity.
"Barry displayed a law enforcement Sheriff Star Badge and identified himself as law enforcement and requested a discount on his order of donuts," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
When he was denied, Barry held up a holstered firearm and said, "See I am a cop!"
Investigators say Barry received a 10 percent discount on several occasions, but became upset when employees denied him the discount because they felt he was abusing it.
"He mentioned to an employee that he was a U.S. Marshal at one point. He also mentioned that he was an Air Marshal, which also raised a flag to the employees," said Captain James Mallo.
Barry is not a U.S. Marshal or an Air Marshal. He works at a printer, fax, and copy machine supplier in Hudson. But Captain Mallo and Sheriff Nocco say he liked to play cop.
The store manager took down Barry's vehicle tag information when he used the drive through at the same store, the next day.
Surveillance was set up at the donut store and a deputy spotted Barry driving away from the business on Tuesday.
"A traffic stop was conducted and while speaking with Barry the deputy observed he had a law enforcement badge in his wallet," the Sheriff's Office said. "He was also carrying a .38 caliber revolver in his front pocket."
Workers identified Barry as the suspect.
"He was very sorry he did what he did. I believe he was even crying on scene," Mallo said.
Sheriff Nocco says the badge once belonged to Barry's father, who was a police officer in New Jersey at one time.
Barry bonded out of jail Wednesday. His concealed weapons permit has been revoked.
