Powerball Ticket Worth $16 Million Sold in Florida Set to Expire, Unclaimed
If you bought a Powerball ticket in Florida, check your lottery ticket because a $16 million jackpot is unclaimed and set to expire on Thursday.
The winning ticket was purchased at Carrollwood Market on West Village Drive in Tampa. The drawing was Saturday, May 25, and the winning numbers were 02, 06, 19, 21, 27 and a Powerball of 25.
The owner of the Carrollwood Market said on Monday, "The store is a neighborhood store, and pretty much 90 percent of our customers are regular customers," she said. "We still have a little bit of hope that somebody will come before Thursday."
Nidia Tannous has placed signs in the store's window, urging customers to check their Powerball tickets from Memorial Day. The store received $25,000 for selling the winning ticket.
According to the Florida Lottery, if a Powerball jackpot isn't claimed within 180 days from the drawing, "the funds to pay the unclaimed jackpot will be returned to the lottery members in their proportion of sales for the jackpot rollover series."
In Florida, about 80 percent of that share will go toward the state's education enhancement trust fund. "In fiscal year 2011-2012, the Florida Lottery transferred more than $1.31 billion to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund. For the eleventh time in the Florida Lottery's 25-year history the agency will surpass the billion-dollar mark in a single year. The Lottery's total contribution since start-up is more than $25 billion. Although this contribution is only a small part of the state's overall education budget, the impact of the Florida Lottery on public education flows from community to community."
The remaining 20 percent goes to the Florida Lottery prize pool to fund new games and promotions.
This will be the largest unclaimed jackpot in Florida since 2003 when a $53 million jackpot expired.
Can you even imagine letting go of $16 million. I really hope the person who bought the ticket doesn't realize it after the fact.
USA Today reports a few reasons that a person could let a Powerball ticket expire.
- Maybe the winner died before he or she could cash in.
- Maybe the person lost the ticket or threw it away.
- Maybe the person is from out of state and forgot.
- Or maybe the person has spent six months getting his or her affairs in order before claiming the jackpot.
