Father Throws 2-year old Son Over Balcony
A father threw his 2-year old son off a second-floor balcony in Kissimmee, Florida after becoming frustrated.
Kissimmee police responded to the Budget Inn on Vine Street around 2 a.m. Tuesday. When police arrived, they found the boy conscious and breathing, but with "large bumps on his forehead and his face... covered in blood," the affidavit states. He was flown to Arnold Palmer Hospital.
The arrest document says the toddler suffered a fractured right arm, fractured right orbital, abrasions to his abdomen and "a large knot on his head." The boy was also being tested for internal injuries.
The boy's father, Juan Pablo Maradiaga, 41, was found lying at the bottom of a stairwell nearby. He was unconscious, had a large lump on his head and his left leg bone was broken and exposed.
An officer at the scene reported smelling "the strong odor of alcohol impurities coming from" Maradiaga, the affidavit states.
Later police reviewed the motel surveillance video, which showed Maradiaga throwing the 2-year old over a second-floor railing, causing the child to fall almost 12 feet to the pavement below, the affidavit says.
Moments after, Maradiaga leaned over the rail and "fell to the ground," the arrest document states.
A Department of Children and Families news release says Juan Pablo Maradiaga will face an attempted felony murder charge when he is released from the hospital.
The child's mother told investigators that she had received a call from Maradiaga before the incident, when he asked her to come home from work "because he was frustrated."
In an interview at Orlando Regional Medical Center with a detective, Maradiaga confessed to "becoming frustrated with [his son], and throwing him from the balcony of the motel," the affidavit states.
