Day Care Crash in Florida Leaves 14 Hurt and 1 Child Dead, Police Hunt for Driver
Police are searching for a man that killed one 4-year old girl and injured 14 others at a day care center in the Winter Park Florida area.
Robert Corchado was driving a Dodge Durango that struck a Toyota Solaro convertible, which jumped a curb and smashed into the KinderCare building on Goldenrod Road near University Boulevard.
More than 50 children and adults were inside the facility at the time of the crash.
The Orange County Fire Rescue reported that 13 of the injured — 11 of them children — were taken to four area hospitals and that two were treated at the scene.
Eight children were taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital. One is in critical condition, three are in serious condition and one is in fair condition. Two children have been released.
Hospital officials said the 4-year-old girl died at 6:45 p.m.
The driver of the Toyota wasn't injured.
Later Wednesday, authorities confirmed Corchado rented a small, black Mazda SUV from an Enterprise in Winter Park, with a Florida license plate CHR-Q41.
A warrant was issued for his arrest Wednesday night and law-enforcement across Central Florida were put on alert as troopers feared Corchado would flee the region.
The Highway Patrol on Wednesday described Robert Corchado as "dangerous."
In May 2009, Corchado was arrested on cocaine and marijuana charges in Orange County. He was sentenced to three years in prison in 2010. He was released from prison in September 2012 but arrested just months later in Seminole County.
He served time for charges of heroin and cocaine possession with intent to sell, as well as leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage. He was currently out on bail, awaiting trial in Seminole County.
